In order to make the most out of your visit to Sovereign Hill, the following teaching resources are offered.

The Settlement of Victoria: An AusVELS Teaching Kit for Level 5

This kit is in draft form and is offered for teachers to trial. It provides links to online resources and practical ideas to teach the content and skills of the national curriculum and culminates in a student project on a famous Victorian. Download a Teachers Guide and AusVELS grid here. A diigo website of bookmarks relating to the research options in this kit is also available and teachers and students are encouraged to add their own good websites. We hope you will help us improve the kit by completing the evaluation form.

 

New Gold Mountain

This fantastic kit was originally published in 2002 and provides information and primary sources for the study of the Chinese on the Goldfields. It is an excellent resource for the Victorian Essential Learning Standards and for the Australian Curriculum cross curriculum priority of Asia and Australia's Engagement with Asia. The kit should be used in conjunction with these two documents.

 

Representing and Commemorating History

An education resource for teachers and students participating in the Burke and Wills Explorer Fountain Project. Linked to VELS Levels 2, 3 and 4 and the Australian History Curriculum.

Creswick Mining Disaster Teaching Kit

This online resource kit for teachers, students and interested public has links to primary and secondary sources of information about the Creswick Mining disaster of 1882. It contains movies, podcasts, pictures and newspaper artilces and classroom teaching ideas.

 

 VELS Sample Units

  •  These units involve some pre-visit work, some activities at Sovereign Hill and follow up work back at school.
  •  Each is designed to offer your students purpose, choice and ownership over their learning while on excursion and provides relevant VELS assessment procedures.
  •  Each unit culminates in the presentation of a rich task.

Students choose a project from Multiple Intelligences / Blooms grid to research while at Sovereign Hill. A variety of presentation styles are suggested and a simple planning tool makes life easy for teachers

Interpreting History at Sovereign Hill

Students develop a movie, Powerpoint, model, soundscape or other presentation in response to a theme of their choice. (Some suggested themes prompt higher level thinking). Sovereign Hill is used as both a research and a presentation tool
