1. Thursday, 4 March, Sustainability Education and History. What can we learn from the Past?
Discover how to incorporate an historical perspective in your Sustainability Unit. Discover how students can use Sovereign Hill’s Outdoor Museum to compare their environmental footprint with an 1850s person and what that means for their lifestyle. Suitable for teachers 4.30 pm – 6.30 pm. Free
2. Thursday, 11 March, Trapped Teachers Preview
Trapped, Sovereign Hill’s newest underground exhibit tells the emotionally powerful story of the disaster that struck Creswick’s New Australasian No 2 Mine in 1882. The multi-sensory experience tells a remarkable story of bravery, of love and loss, and of the resilience of goldfields communities. We’ll share with you the background to the story and the challenges in telling it. Then, travel into the mine on the Inclined Tramway to experience the heart-wrenching story that is still the worst tragedy in Victoria’s long gold mining history. Suitable for teachers and Sovereign Hill members. 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm. Free
3. Saturday, 27 March, HTAV Members Day
A special day for HTAV and Sovereign Hill teacher members to find out what is new at Sovereign Hill Education. Join your colleagues to find out about Sovereign Hill’s education programs, experience the new Trapped exhibit about the Creswick Mine disaster, preview a new interpretive theatre piece on the Anti-Chinese League, meet the real Lola Montez—the Madonna of her day, and enjoy a free light lunch and have time to explore the rest of Sovereign Hill. Starts at 9.30 am – All day. Free
4. Wednesday, 26 May, National Sorry Day -Indigenous People and the Victorian Gold Rushes
Vicki Peart, the Stolen Generations Officer for the Ballarat Aboriginal Co-operative, will talk about the Stolen Generations and its consequences in contemporary Australian history. The University of Ballarat’s Fred Cahir has broken new ground on the nature of contact between Indigenous people and the gold rushes, exposing some myths and untold of black and white relations in the goldrush days. Find out about our Indigenous History and explore Sovereign Hill’s new Indigenous education programs. Free. 4.30pm to 6.30pm
5. Saturday, 19 June, Pre Book Week Conference – Across the Story Bridge
Suzanne Thwaites, the Victorian Childrens’ Book Council judge, will discuss the books nominated for the prestigious Children’s Book of the Year award, and provide an insight into judging excellence in children’s literature. Ideal for Primary teachers and librarians. 11.00 am - 2.00 pm $35 includes a light lunch.
6. Friday, 23 July, Regional Toolbox for Environmental Change 2010 Sustainability Forum at Narmbool.
Greening Australia, Sustainability Victoria and Sovereign Hill are partnering to deliver the second Regional Toolbox for Environmental Change forum in Victoria. This forum specifically for regional teachers and environmental educators will provide delegates with inspiring experts on sustainability and biodiversity, participation in ‘hands-on’ workshops and demonstrations, loads of ideas and resources for effective teaching strategies. 9.Thursday, 15 July, Lola Montez Returns to the Victoria Theatre
Lola Montez was considered notorious by many when she visited the Victorian goldfields, but her talent and reputation abroad made her the Madonna of her day. Come and see Lola as you will never have seen her before, find out about this remarkable woman’s achievements, and enjoy a recreation of her premiere performance in the Victoria Theatre. Suitable for teachers and Sovereign Hill Members. 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm. Free
10. Friday, 13 August, Primary Teachers’ Conference: History through Stories
A one-day conference supported by Sovereign Hill, the School Library Assoc. of Victoria (SLAV) and The History Teachers Assoc. of Victoria (HTAV). During 2010, draft curriculum for K-10 English, Maths, Science and History will be released for the new National Curriculum. In the primary classroom, effective teaching strategies will incorporate literacy and the development to f historical literacy skills. The conference will focus on innovative teaching strategies integrating history and literacy. The day will also include ideas for Book Week activities. Suitable for Primary teachers. 9.00 am – 3.30 pm Cost: $80.00 Sovereign Hill, HTAV and SLAV members, $100 others. Prepayment required
